Canyons Closest to Banyuls-sur-Mer

Céret and Amélie-les-Bains are two small towns located in the Vallespir region of the Pyrénées-Orientales department, where you can discover canyoning, whether as a beginner’s course or a more challenging adventure.

The Céret area features parallel valleys where canyons have been carved over time.
The Gourg des Anelles canyon in Céret (Gorges of the Rings) is the most enclosed section of the Vallière River, which originates at the foot of the “Roc del Pou de la Neu” (The Rock of the Snow Well), where the inhabitants of Céret used to collect ice to bring down to the village and sell. It is overlooked by the “Pic de Font Freda” (The Peak of the Cold Fountain), which has a very large water catchment basin that supplies the canyon with water year-round, making it a natural waterway. The unique feature of this canyon is the narrowness of its gorges, which are less than 1 meter wide in places, its three large pools (natural swimming holes) that can be crossed by swimming, and its two large waterfalls (16 and 26 meters).

The Baoussous Waterfall Canyon in Céret, known as “Salt dels Bussos” (Diver’s Leap), is the most enclosed section of the Noguerèda River (a walnut grove). Traditionally, the inhabitants of Céret would come to this spot to perform jumps and dives (bussos) from the last waterfall, unknowingly practicing the beginnings of canyoning at the start of the last century. This canyon is perfectly suited for introductory canyoning trips with ropes.

Finally, in Amélie-les-Bains, you can enjoy canyoning as a family in the lower Terme Gorge with children as young as 8.
