Family Canyoning in the Pyrenees Orientales
In the foothills of the Corbières, located between the departments of Aude 11 and Pyrénées Orientales 66, the Galamus Gorges canyon is a deep notch in the Fenouillèdes limestone barrier that offers a magnificent fun canyoning course. The Galamus canyon is made up of a succession of pools and potholes, small slides, and easy but never compulsory jumps.
The canyon’s gorges gradually narrow, allowing us to move between two walls of over 100m on each side. This is truly the canyon for having fun and discovering the activity without apprehension. No rope rappels, jumps up to 7m (not mandatory).
From the canyon exit, take a small path leading to the chapel of the Hermitage of Saint-Antoine de Galamus, which is perched at an altitude of 376 meters in the gorge, clinging to the rock. Incredible!
The hermitage chapel was built in a natural cave located in the cliff face.
The canyon descent starts in the commune of Cubières sur Cinoble in the Aude region at the L’Oule car park. The climb ends below the Belvédère car park on the Saint-Paul-de-Fenouillet side in the Pyrénées Orientales.
The Galamus Gorges canyon is a family-friendly water hike. This easy canyon is very accessible. Equipped with a wetsuit, a harness required to cross a small handrail, and a helmet, discover this sport in the magnificent natural setting of Cathar country.
The Agly River, originating in the Hautes-Corbières, has cut vertically through the Galamus limestone chain over 500 meters deep to carve out a passage to the Mediterranean. The natural site of the Galamus Gorges thus created is quite exceptional.
